Chapter 6

Once back at the marina, it took very little time for Ransom to make the boat secure, and in less time than it took to say it they were in the car and driving back towards the house. They didn’t say much to each other on the homeward journey, and it was only because Sam was keeping her attention focussed out of the window, not on the man in the driver’s seat, that she suddenly caught sight of Alex.

They had paused at a road junction near a beautiful old country pub, and she was busily admiring the building when she became aware that sitting outside it at one of the tables was Alex.

‘Oh, look! There’s…’ Sam started to say, with the intention of calling to him, when out of the corner of her eye she saw a young woman come out of the pub door. That in itself wasn’t unusual. What stopped Sam in her tracks was the fact the woman went to join Alex. Within seconds their two heads were close together as they engaged in what was obviously a very private conversation.

‘…Alex,’ she finally completed the sentence, eyebrows raised in mild surmise.

She had managed to draw Ransom’s attention away from the traffic flow. He glanced round, and when he followed her pointing finger his eyes widened. ‘Well, I’ll be damned!’ he exclaimed, just as an irate toot from behind alerted him to the fact that the road was clear. With an apologetic acknowledgement, Ransom quickly set the car in motion.

Sam frowned as she turned to look at him. ‘Do you know who she is?’ she asked, and he spared her a quick look laden with irony.

‘I haven’t the foggiest idea, but they were certainly cosy. I imagine she was an old friend.’

A cheeky smile flickered across her face. ‘A very old friend,’ she agreed, and saw his lips twitch.

‘A very old, close friend,’ Ransom amended on cue. ‘I’m curious. Just how much has Alex told you about his past involvements?’

Sam sighed, irritated by the implication of his question. ‘Nothing at all. We don’t have that kind of relationship. As I’ve tried to tell you many times. It’s probably safe to say he has secrets like the rest of us,’ she pointed out reasonably.

Ransom glanced at her with a provocative grin. ‘Can’t argue with that, can we?’

Sam’s nerves leapt at his insinuation that there were still a lot of secrets waiting to be uncovered. ‘Speak for yourself!’

He laughed mockingly. ‘Liar! I tell you what. I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours. What do you say?’

She sent him a scornful look. ‘I say you’ll wait until hell freezes over!’

All he did was laugh some more. ‘Sam, Sam, you are so predictable! Anyway, getting back to Alex. Karl did tell me that his brother had been heavily involved in the past.’

‘Do you think that’s her?’ she asked, her curiosity piqued by what she had seen.

Ransom shrugged. ‘Who knows? That little tableau may have been entirely innocent.’

Sam frowned as she considered that, then rejected it.
